Tantra yoga – what is it and what does it involve?

What is tantric yoga?

At its core, tantra is about connecting with your own energy for a deeper understanding of yourself. Some of this energy is sexual, but not all of it, because tantra is not equivalent to tantric sex. Understanding the essence of the techniques and goals of tantra yoga is important because hatha yoga is derived from this system of yoga, and tantra provides the context for the individual practices and techniques of modern yoga.

Tantric yoga can be practiced alone or in pairs during classes in a yoga studio. Practicing should begin by creating a comfortable and safe place where you can experience yourself together. Dimmed lights, loose clothes, or sometimes even no clothes at all if you want, candlelight, a yoga mat – and you can start an intimate adventure together.

Sukhasana – cross-legged position

Begin gently adapting to your partner’s energy. Close your eyes and take deep, long breaths together. Allow your breathing rhythms to synchronize.

Twist in Svastikasana – twist in a cross-legged position

Stay seated. Raise your arms and touch your hands, pressing your elbows together. Slowly twist to one side and hold for 3-5 breaths, then twist to the other side.

Virasana – Hero Pose Sit

Sit on your ankles with your back straight, close enough to place your hands on each other’s lap. You can look into each other’s eyes or close them for greater concentration.

Sukhasana for two

The lighter partner sits on the other. Wrap your arms around each other, close enough to feel your partner’s heartbeat. Stay like this for 5-10 breaths. This position allows you to connect your energies.

You can also choose the traditional version, i.e. lie next to each other – with your hips touching, or with your partner’s head at your feet, holding hands or placing them on your stomach.

When performing subsequent asanas, be attentive to each other and respect your own limitations and capabilities. Maintain eye contact and refrain from talking while you are in position. Allow yourselves to cultivate your shared energy and deepen your soul connection.

What is the difference between tantra yoga and regular yoga?

Tantric yoga weaves together many yogic and meditation practices. It includes various asanas – twists, backbends, forward and side bends. The primary difference is the spiritual nature between them. Yoga practices are often associated with seclusion, self-education and turning “inward.” Tantra does the opposite and can therefore be described as the “yoga of human connection.”
